This is more than just Mexican food. This is about bringing a little piece of Mexico to my home in NY and bringing along memories of familia and friends left behind. This is about bringing back my roots with every smell and sound of grinding cummin in the molcajete and as I enjoy every bite and close my eyes, I feel traveling through the distance and time being back in my beautiful Mexico surrounded by my Mom, Dad, my three sisters, and wonderful friends.
This is what cooking Mexican food from scratch does to me: it takes me back. I am always trying to find the right ingredients and the right cooking utensils in order to replicate that unforgetable flavor of my childhood of naranjas con chile, spicy candy, and flour tortillas "paloteadas". As I enjoy recreating these recipes to honor my heritage, I hope you enjoy them too and get to know something different or something new about Mexican culture and its unique cuisine.
All recipes here are pretty much what my Mom, Dad, and families cook every day in the northern city of Saltillo, the capital of Coahuila, Mexico. My father was always a big advocate of cooking everything from scratch and with the freshest ingredients possible. He would wake up early in the morning and head to the "mercado" to get meat and vegetables to cook for that day. He did not believe in pressure cookers either, so all his stews and dishes were cooked for hours, adding to the flavor. All what I know about cooking I owe it to him and if you see that any of my recipes are a little different from what you've seen, remember that this is from scratch, homemade, or as we would say, "comida casera" from the heart.
